Preservation Ranch

Increasing Carbon Storage

Preservation Ranch represents a significant opportunity to aid in the fight against global warming by increasing carbon sequestration.  Carbon is stored in trees, particularly large trees, and the Preservation Ranch proposal will have a very positive affect on the total amount of carbon stored in the forest over time.  Several key project components help increase carbon storage:

  • Over 1 million new conifers will be planted, 3 times as many trees as will be removed for vineyards
  • 15,000 acres of forest will be placed under a conservation easement that requires sustainable management
  • Over 1,800 acres of forest will have special protections to grow large trees
  • Over 1,600 acres of forest will be in larger stream protection zones that also encourage large trees
  • Over 2,700 will be set aside as the Windy Gap Preserve, forever prohibiting logging
  • 221 acres will be donated to Sonoma County for an expansion of the Soda Springs Reserve park

To ensure that we understand our carbon impacts and meet our goal of increasing carbon storage,  we will work with third parties:

  • The project's carbon impacts will be reviewed during Preservation Ranch's CEQA Environmental Review.
  • We will participate in the Climate Action Reserve (CAR), a national offsets program focused on ensuring environmental integrity of GHG emissions reduction projects to create and support financial and environmental value in the U.S. carbon market.
